But for those of you who have started, gotten frustrated, drank your coffee, and finished writing & editing… take one second to see if you’ve made any of these 5 common email marketing mistakes. When I first started (and was a brand new copywriter) #3 was the bane of my existence!
Mistake #1 - You’re Not using eye-catching subject lines
I bet you’ve read the statistic, “You have 2-3 seconds to catch a person’s attention.” I’m here to tell you that couldn’t be more true for emails too! Let’s face it, everyone, including your potential customer is bombarded with 60+ emails everyday. It’s reported that The average number of emails in an inbox is 200. 😱
That means you, not should, but MUST stand out!
If you need some help with click - worthy email subject lines check out my workbook.
Mistake #2 - You’re using SPAM flagging words in your email & subject line
Email hosters like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and the starter of the email world MSN, have raised their shields high and made it their personal vendetta to make sure there’s no, “hot singles in your area.” (Not going to lie, those emails always made me laugh). But on a serious note, email providers scan millions of emails a day and sometimes yours might get beeped in their security scanner blaster. What does that mean? Your beautifully crafted email get sent straight to spam and you wouldn’t know it!
Here are some words to avoid in the first email you send:
“FREE STUFF” - While you might actually provide free resources to your customers, stray away from writing the word FREE in the subject line for the first email. Try, “Your freebie…” or “Package for [Name] is Here!”
Multiple exclamation points - I know you're excited to welcome them, but trust me, its not worth potential spam jail. Limit to one exclamation point! (see what I did there?)
Multiple Emojis: Same like exclamation points, it triggers the spam police. Not worth it for the first few emails you send your customers. The goal is to be seen, opened, and read.
Mistake #3 - Not addressing your customer by name
This might seem like a no brainer, but after speaking with numerous business owners, it’s often an overlooked step in their email marketing game.
But after you start addressing your customers by their name and not, “Hey Friend!” or “Hey fellow plant lover,” you’re going to see an increase in open rates. Because let’s face it, people love to know they are being spoken to directly!
Mistake #4 - You’re sending too many emails
Did you know over communicating can sometimes be a bad thing? And no, I'm not talking about relationships. That’s probably the exception. Email communication with your potential customers is a different story though! Scoot closer for some truth.
Here’s a crazy statement. Did you know that email subscribers (those who want to hear from you) ultimately hit the “unsubscribe” button because they get annoyed with you bombarding them?
So what should you do?
There are multiple things you can do to decrease the risk of your ideal customers hitting that dangerous button, but the most important is this: Tell them what they can expect from you.
If you want to learn how to do that, you can read this blog post here. But that’s simply it. Tell them what they will get by subscribing to you, and don’t deliver any more or any less without telling them first.
Mistake #5 - Don’t forget to deliver valuable content
This goes without saying, your subscriber came to you because they were seeking something. Make sure you keep delivering it! For my email subscribers, I include weekly copywriting tips they can use in their business for immediate success. I make sure that they receive these small wins because when our community wins so does the world.
So whether you share information about your business, the ingredients you use and its importance, upcoming events, blog posts, or entertainment, make sure you keep your people coming back for more! (They might even tell their friends).
